Hey guys, you can view this month's newsletter here.
Hey guys!
It's time to start thinking about CUMC - the Canadian Undergraduate Mathematics Conference! It's one of Canada's largest
undergraduate conferences and will take place from July 11 to 15, 2012 at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan
campus in Kelowna. It is an amazing opportunity to learn about new areas of mathematics, meet students from across the country
with similar interests, and practice giving a mathematical talk. To learn more, check out their website at
http://cumc.math.ca/2012/en/index.html.
Each year, the Carleton Math Society helps raise money to send students to the conference. Please note that we although we
hope to fully fund the trip, this is not a guarantee, as it depends on how successful our fundraising is. Since the conference
will be so far away this year, we need to start early in order to fundraise as much as we can. Any student is welcome to attend
the conference - but in order to be eligible for funding, you must currently be in second year mathematics or higher, and you
must present a speech at the conference.
CUMC is a truly incredible experience. If you would like to apply for funding, send us an email at cu_mathsoc@yahoo.ca
including your name, year, and a brief abstract of your speech (100 word max), by December 1st. Depending on the number of
applications we receive, there may be further selection processes at that time.
Just letting you all know that photos from some of our events this year have now been posted in the pictures page of this
website... Enjoy! :)

As I look out the window, I can't help but notice that the leaves are changing colours, there's a nip in the air and the pile of homework on my windowsill has grown exponentially. This can only mean one thing: September is no more. With this conclusion comes a glance back at the month's Math Society events.
First up, the extremely successful BBQ! The fact that we managed to run out of hot dogs (twice) can only mean I wasn't the only one enjoying the food, conversation and to-die-for cookies. It was fantastic meeting all the new faces and having a chance to catch up with old friends.
Following the BBQ was a staple ingredient in the Math Society social calendar... a soccer game! What better way to relieve the stress caused by complex calculus and algebra equations than to spend quality time with your fellow math peers kicking a ball around?
Next up it was on to the used book sale, the best friend of any university student trying to find a good bargain. The bargain hunting paid off, with many math students managing to find helpful texts for incredible prices.
Last, but definitely not least, was Dr. Moore's Colloquium on Paradoxes. Based on the fact that Dr. Moore successfully managed to confuse a packed room within 30 seconds, I believe the problem of paradoxes was nailed on the head. The colloquium was exceptionally informative, fun, and easy enough to follow (even for the one non-math student in the room!). It was a grand success, if the empty Timbit boxes and the constant audience participation were of any indication.
Well, that about sums up the month's events. Be sure to check out October's many happenings. Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Kelsey Johnson is a Carleton Journalism student who finds herself hanging out with Math people way too much... and for some reason loves every minute of it.
We have a new first-year rep! Please welcome Kim Nguyen to the team. (We already have Kimmy Walters and Kim Crosbie... we figured one more
"Kim" couldn't hurt! Anne-Marie and Michelle are thinking of changing their names to "Kim" too, just to be consistent...)
Just a quick note to welcome new students to Carleton, and to welcome back returning students! If you haven't had a chance to check
out our September newsletter yet, you can find a copy of it here. Our first
event is the kick off BBQ and social, happening tomorrow. Check our events page for more details.
We've been making some exciting new changes to the mathsoc room. We now have a couch, bookshelves, and a whiteboard (all by
donation)! Make sure you come check it out - it really is a great spot to hang out and get some work done.
We've got a new Facebook group up and running since our old group is being archived soon. So if you are on Facebook be sure to
join the new group if you want to stay in touch with upcoming events, share ideas, and post questions! You can find the group at
www.facebook.com/groups/162824413793696 or you can just
search for Carleton Math Society on Facebook.
We're in the process of setting dates for next year's events. Make sure you check our Events page regularly -
new events will be posted there as soon as we finalize the details! The next event will be a Fields Undergrad Meeting on July 22
(see the Events page for more info).
Last week five Carleton students had the priviledge of attending this year's CUMC (Canadian Undergraduate Mathematics Conference),
held at Laval University. The students had an amazing time and the trip wouldn't have been possible without generous donations
from Carleton's math and stats faculty, as well as money raised during MathSoc fundraisers last year. To learn more about the
conference, you can check out their website at http://cumc.math.ca.
Check back with us next year if you're interested in attending CUMC 2012 at the UBC Kelowna campus!
